Welcome to our page! We are Bob and Betty Lou Buckwalter, owners and hosts of the Cleft of the Rock B & B. Traveling and living in a variety of places has been a big part of our lives, so we know how important it is to find clean, comfortable, hospitable accommodations when on the road.

Our past adventures have taken us to Africa, where we spent eleven years in Tanzania, Somalia, Ethiopia, Zambia and Kenya, interspersed with visits to various European and Middle Eastern countries. For our three years in Kenya, we were managers and hosts of a 35-bed guest house in Nairobi, where we enjoyed meeting people from all over the world.

Here in the USA, we have lived in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and now in Alaska. On our New York tree farm we collected and boiled enough sap to produce about 400 gallons of maple syrup every spring. Life on the farm provided lots of great work ethic opportunities for our four young sons, along with wonderful family memories. In Virginia, we lived in an unusual cedar shake-covered geodesic dome home, sitting like a huge upside down basket on 14 acres in a "holler" in the George Washington National Forest. This nature lovers' paradise entertained us with a variety of wildlife and miles of old logging roads and mountain ridges for hiking. The four sons eventually found their way to Alaska and before long we followed.

Our adventure continues in the out-of-the-ordinary place called Tok. This is the place for a wonderful summer visit if you like pleasantly warm weather, and a most invigorating winter stay if you like to experience real cold. Yes, Tok may be the coldest little Alaskan town in the winter, but it also has the warmest-hearted people.
